										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Prof. Rafael I. Barraquer Compte is a graduate of Medicine and Surgery from the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB, 1979). He has a ECFMG certificate (Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates) (1980), is a Consultant in Ophthalmology at the Barraquer Ophthalmology Centre (1982) and has a PhD in Medicine and Surgery from the UAB (1989).</p>
<p>The Professor is currently the Medical Director of the Barraquer Ophthalmology Centre and Teaching Director of the Accredited Unit for the Training of Specialists in Ophthalmology on the Official House Officer (MIR) programme. He is Vice-President and Teaching Director of the Barraquer Institute, Associate Professor of Ophthalmology of the UAB—where he is also Holder of the Joaquin Barraquer Chair in Ophthalmology Research—, President of the European Association for Vision and Eye Research (EVER) and Professor of Ophthalmology at the International University of Catalonia (UIC).</p>
<p>Prof. Barraquer’s teaching activity includes over 4500 hours of teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level, which started when he was a medicine student in 1979, including training over 100 house officers in Ophthalmology. He is a member of more than 30 scientific associations. He has attended and actively participated in more than 300 scientific conferences and meetings. His bibliography includes 7 books as author, 57 book chapters and other contributions. He has published 130 scientific article, 75 of which are in indexed journals, 42 in Journal Citation Reports (JCR) and 25 in Q1. His main areas of interest in research are anterior segment diseases and surgery, particularly the cornea, refractive surgery and crystalline lens substitutes (Faco-Ersatz project), as well as conservative treatment of eye tumours.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery from the Autonomous University of Barcelona (1977). She continued her training in the United States, with a Research Scholarship at the National Eye Institute (Bethesda, Maryland). She continued her curriculum as a Fellow in Ocular Pathology at the Laboratory of the Wilmer Eye Institute (Baltimore), as an Intern in Medicine at the Sinai Hospital of Baltimore, and from 1984 to 1987 trained as a medical resident in Ophthalmology at the Massachusetts Eye &amp; Ear Infirmary (Boston). She then became a Cornea Fellow for two years at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute (Miami), and settled in Turin (Italy) in late 1989.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>A specialist surgeon since 1995 in the surgical retina —macula surgery, diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachment— and in adult intraocular tumours—brachytherapy on uveal melanoma and other tumours—. He undertook complementary training in New York (Columbia University and Vitreous Macula Retina Consultants of New York), Miami (Bascom Palmer Eye Institute), Memphis (Charles Retina Institute) and Philadelphia (Wills Eye Hospital). He gained his PhD cum laude in Medicine and Surgery from the Autonomous University of Barcelona. He is the first author of books entitled Retinopatía diabética y otras complicaciones de la diabetes mellitus (Diabetic Retinopathy and Other Complications of Diabetes Mellitusv)and Tumores vasculares de la retina y la coroides (Vascular Tumours of the Retina and the Choroid) (two editions).</p>
<p>Dr. Javier Elizalde is very active in the teaching field, both clinical as well as surgical. He has taken part in more than 650 scientific meetings and teaching activities in addition to having trained more than 80 house officers and ophthalmologists. Furthermore, he has published 78 articles in scientific magazines, 21 chapters of book and 5 monographs. The foregoing has led him to an exceptional standing in the medical field and to an acclaimed position in the press, having given more than 100 interviews to newspapers, radio and on television.</p>
